First Circus, the new Haute Couture collection

First Circus Haute Couture Collection

January 28, 2025 Runway Show

Théâtre Mogador

Reaching the age of 50, I am now feeling completely free to reveal what has always been with me: enthusiasm, dreaming, dancing, partying… In short, everything that has driven me and set me in motion since childhood. In the house that bears my name and which I have founded 16 years ago, I don’t really design and make fashion pieces, I create characters.
Where do I find the inspiration to do this? In movies, in cartoons, in music from the 1990s. When, as a young teenager, I had become a prey to violence and harassment because of my differences, my bedroom had become my shelter. it was populated with fantastic figures: small statues of superheroes, mangas, princesses… These characters have all grown up with me, They have accompanied me in all my battles and they are still populating my imagination and the shelves of my creative studio. Today, I am putting them on stage at Théâtre Mogador in Paris, to reveal them in full light because they have always acted as protective talismans for me.

Of course, I have since discovered and acquired the techniques and know hows of Haute Couture and of the best craftsmen who surround it. I can offer today an ultra-luxury version of these characters who have given birth to more heroes. Each one of them, from the goddess in a cyborg trench coat opening the show to the luxury dealer version of the white rabbit, together with the impressive ringmaster, the “exploded “Joker, the female clown from a black and white flick or the princess who has gone through the mirror… All off them could come out of an animated film. This is what continues to fascinate me when I am looking at the metaverse: I am not only considering how to integrate into the virtual world, architectured clothing with multiple layers of fabric, I would also like to see the aesthetics of the animated films that have made us dream since childhood on real women and men living in our world .

Indeed, this is a real full show. No, this is not fashion… or what is usually expected from “regular” fashion pieces. Down with trends! Long live independent and free Haute Couture! Free to create and offer its customers legendary outfits for women and men who give themselves the freedom to acquire them and have the guts to wear them under the right circumstances.

Each look in this collection is, in fact, an original work of textile art, through the mastery in its construction, but also through the selected colors and through their incredible embellishments. I thank the craftsmen who contributed to make my fantasies come true with their exceptional technical skills, I thank the tailors and seamstresses in my workshop who have complied with all my design requirements and sewing techniques, and to the artists and friends who were kind enough to participate in this show to make it an extravagant moment. Thanks to Audrey Fleurot, Marina Viotti, Ashey Scott, Déborah François, Cédric Le Gallo and all my supermodels for a day… Whether you are opera singers, film actresses, a sculptress or film directors , your support is highly appreciated! Thanks are also going to Wilfried Bernard who directed the choreography in the show and to my dancers gathered for the event.

As the spokesman for this collective effort, and in the name of all the multiple talents gathered to bring back full excitement and fun to this Haute Couture show, please be aware that we are all only seeking to share my joy of dreaming, sketching, sewing and performing.

Designer Julien Fournie Turns 50, Brimming With Ideas

haute couture
→ WATCH VIDEO
Paris, 26 jan 2025 (AFP) –
By Jordi ZAMORA

French designer Julien Fournie will celebrate his 50th birthday on Tuesday during Paris’s Haute Couture Week, with the circus-themed show set to underline his enduring creativity.

In a sector that has become more subdued following the loss of icons like Thierry Mugler and Karl Lagerfeld, Fournie continues to believe in fashion as a spectacle.

The event, called “First Circus”, will take place at the Mogador theatre in central Paris, with 1,600 invites, including surprise guests.

It’s a major investment for an independent label that must manage its resources.

“I’m not one of those so-called cursed designers who lack ideas. On the contrary, I’ve got about 30 collections in the works in my sketchbooks,” Fournie told AFP at his studio in the 10th district of Paris.

“It’s more the lack of funds that prevents me from creating more,” he lamented.

Tuesday’s show will feature around 30 creations, including menswear for the first time.

Last year, Fournie caused a sensation at the Mogador with a tribute to the “vamp” woman to mark the 15th anniversary of his fashion house.

Elsewhere during Haute Couture week, all eyes will be on the Dior show at the Rodin Museum on Monday which could be the last by Maria Grazia Chiuri.

The Italian’s eight-year stint as creative director of women’s collections is thought by observers to be coming to an end, with British designer Jonathan Anderson, currently at Loewe, tipped to replace her.

Fournie clings to the idea of haute couture as being about craftsmanship and creating a connection with fans and buyers, rather than a corporate-led exercise in self-promotion through celebrities and influencers.

Fashion doesn’t interest me

“Fashion doesn’t interest me. I don’t want to know what’s happening elsewhere. I don’t like trends,” he said. “It’s incredibly wasteful to churn out endless collections.

“We create unique collections for unique clients, which is the essence of haute couture: a one-of-a-kind garment for a one-of-a-kind moment,” he said proudly.

Many of his dresses are sold before they’re even shown to the public, he said.

But his decision to stage grand shows stands in contrast to Haute Couture’s typically discreet clientele, which includes Middle Eastern and Asian royalty and wealthy buyers from Europe and the United States.

In total, about 60 clients sustain Fournie’s house.

This independence, free from the relentless pace of new releases and accessories of major brands, allows him to maintain a 17-person team during show seasons.

“I can present a collection when and how I want. I don’t force myself to create collections,” he explained.

For now, his priority is to remain independent in a sector increasingly dominated by luxury giants like LVMH and Kering.

Chanel’s Haute Couture show is set to take place on Tuesday at the Grand Palais, but the collection has been prepared by in-house designers, not new creative director Matthieu Blazy who was only unveiled in December.

Fendi and Maison Margiela are both likely to be absent following the recent departures of chief designers Kim Jones and John Galliano.

Switzerland’s Kevin Germanier, whose work starred during the closing ceremony of the Paris Olympic Games in August, is set to present his first Haute Couture collection in Paris on Thursday.

Julien Fournié Haute Couture House

Maison Julien Fournié is more than a fashion brand, it’s a luxury experience that transcends trends and seasons. With its commitment to excellence and innovation, Julien Fournié continues to redefine the world of Haute Couture and ultra luxury.

Founded in 2009 by the couturier Julien Fournié, the Julien Fournié house is centered around what the designer calls his “laboratory”: Haute Couture.

The history of the house is reflected in his collections unveiled in Paris, in January and July each year, during Haute Couture Week.

For his first collection, the young couturier was awarded the Grand Prize of Creativity by the City of Paris in January 2010.

For the fourth collection, in January 2011, Julien Fournié became a “guest member” of the official calendar of Haute Couture runway shows. This marked a first step in acknowledging Julien Fournié as a promising new brand in the circle of grand couturiers.

With this new title, Julien Fournié has put on the runway for the first time in the history of Haute Couture, a collection only worn by black models.

In January 2017, the Julien Fournié House was officially classified as “Haute Couture”. The Haute Couture label, protected by the French Ministry of Industry, is given to a few houses (only ten prestigious haute couture houses on this list today) which combine the best of creativity in design and the utmost quality in garment making.

Since its beginnings, Julien Fournié has also had the honor of being invited to show the House’s collections abroad, at prestigious events, in order to make the couturier’s style known to luxury clients worldwide, in their own country.

On many occasions, Julien Fournié has shown in Singapore, in Stockholm, in Ho Chi Minh City, in Warsaw …

In March 2023, a Julien Fournié dress entered the Musée Grévin in Paris, worn by the character of actress Audrey Fleurot.

In April 2023, the first retrospective of Julien Fournié’s work is shown in an exhibition “Haute Couture un point c’est tout” at SCAD Lacoste.

While respecting the tradition of haute couture clothing, Julien Fournié has also forged new partnerships with high-tech giants such as Apple and Tencent.

Julien Fournié was thus able to digitize the creation, design and personalization of his Haute Couture pieces. He is one of the rare designers of Haute Couture to master the new digital tools.

Long considered as a survivor of a bygone era, the Haute Couture market has experienced a new boom in recent years. Julien Fournié has been able to establish direct and unique means of communication with his clients thanks to new technologies. It is no longer a question of sending Haute Couture clients a sketch to be validated, as was done in the past.

Julien Fournié has introduced a new process in which clients are not just spectators of the creative process. They have become actors in the unique experience of creating a Haute Couture garment wherever they are.

Since December 2020, Julien Fournié has been developing a line of luxury bags and accessories. At first, the idea was to offer handbags seen in Julien Fournié Haute Couture shows and reserved, until then, for Haute Couture clients.

Julien Fournié has thus been able to digitize the creation, design and personalization of his haute couture pieces. He is one of the few haute couture designers to master the new digital tools.

Long regarded as a survivor of a bygone era, the haute couture market has experienced a new boom in recent years. Thanks to new technologies, Julien Fournié has been able to establish direct and unique means of communication with his clients. It is no longer a question of sending a sketch to the client for approval, as was the case in the past.

Julien Fournié has introduced a new process in which clients are no longer mere spectators of the creative process. They have become actors in the unique experience of creating a garment wherever they are.

Since December 2020, Julien Fournié has been developing a line of luxury bags and accessories. Initially, the idea was to offer handbags that could be seen in Julien Fournié shows and were previously reserved for haute couture customers.

The Last Queen Collection

For His new Haute Couture collection you’ve seen backstage fashion shows, Julien Fournié pays tribute to Marie-Antoinette, the last queen of France, at the Paris-based Musée Grévin.

She is the undisputed initiator of all Haute Couture.

“Whatever one thinks about her role in History,. Marie-Antoinette was a model of style for all the courts of Europe. She has started the movement at the very origin of fashion: preferring what is new to what has always been considered beautiful.”

Julien Fournié

Contacted by the Grévin Museum management to create an outfit for the statue of Marie-Antoinette “in her full majesty,” Julien Fournié wanted to restore the splendor of her life in Versailles and to make a statement about her as a fashion icon, a status which the last queen of France has acquired for more than two centuries as the first genuine influencer.

To accompany this event, the French couturier also presents six looks inspired by the codes of the legend of Marie-Antoinette, declined in today’s Haute Couture pieces showcasing the work of the best artisans. It includes, of course, corsets and ball gowns with huge volumes, but also looks flirting with masculine suits on feminine silhouettes,
The first look of this Haute Couture collection presents, under a long trench coat in plum washed silk, embroidered with old silver plant motifs, an ensemble entirely made of saddle-style leather, in various dear to Marie-Antoinette pastel shades. This training outfit also includes fleur-de-lis inlays on the pants, and flat bow ornaments on the bustier. A leather crown with medallions and royal gaiters complete this outfit.

The new Big bang Bag

Accessories also feature prominently in the Haute Couture collection you’ve seen backstage fashion shows: “Ex Voto” earrings and brooches, the brand’s monogrammed tote bag in “lenticular” coated canvas, and three versions of the new “Big Bang” bag in the tender colors of the 18th century.

A pant suit, cut in a Prince of Wales wool in bright colors, comes enhanced with lilacs embroideries. It is paired with a lavallere silk blouse and a bicorn hat, decorated with a feather arrow and brooch in the style of “Incroyables”.
A “boyish” azure jacket, embroidered with silver, over a short silk and lurex nightie, reveals the the legs’ full length barely covered with “nude” sheer leggings embroidered with royal jewels.

A wide embroidered ball gown swirls and reveals a mix of peony, soft pink and sweetbriar tones on multiple precious layers of sheer fabrics.
To mark the diversity and universality of the Marie-Antoinette style, a flowery bustier in shades of canary yellow adorned with matching roses and jewelry tops a giant petticoat of matching tulles on the ebony body of Toby Momoh, a Julien Fournié muse.

The last look in this Haute Couture collection you’ve seen backstage fashion show reinterprets embroidered elements of the legend surrounding the last queen of France: as shepherdess, pastry lover, mother in love with her son, and playing with her coat of arms, a ll as if hand sketched like Asian anime in tattoo style. They flourish on a “gothic rockabily” look cinched by a black crystal embroidered black jacket with a crater collar and split basque.

The highlight of the Haute Couture collection you’ve seen fashion show backstage is only revealed at the finale: Queen Marie-Antoinette’s majestic court costume includes a corset decorated with embroidered bows, a skirt, an overskirt, ruffled sleeves, in bright white silk triple organza, embellished with sparkling embroidery in various shades of silver and moon gold recalling the queen’s favorite musical instruments, symbols of the French royals and the motifs of Versailles. Ribbons, feathers and pearls enliven her hair, topped with a sparkling flocked galleon with embroidered sails featuring the French monarch’s symbol. Julien Fournié also wanted to return to the Queen of France a replica of the famous necklace from the “Affair” which Marie-Antoinette never actually wore…

This new statue of Queen Marie-Antoinette now stands among the permanent collections of the wax Museum, in the Coupole at Grévin, which has brought together the characters of “Grévin Fashion” since 2014,

From June 28th to September 1, 2024, the six looks from the Julien Fournié’s “Last Queen” Haute Couture collection you’ve seen fashion show backstage will remain on display in this same place so that a wider audience can admire up close and in complete freedom Haute Couture knowhow.

“I was very happy to make this luxury accessible to a popular audience eager for fashion culture, especially at a time when Paris is welcoming the world for the Olympic Games.”
