Việt Nam News reporter Phương Mai speaks with Fournié about his performance at the Aquafina Vietnam International Fashion Week

Inner SanctumWhat are your impressions of Vietnamese fashion and designers?

There is much energy among Vietnamese fashion designers. Sài Gòn [former name of HCM City] used to be considered the Paris of the East for fashion, and there is a lot of know-how here about fashion, stitching, swinging, and embellishing garments.

I intend to introduce Haute Couture here in Việt Nam Fashion Week. There is still a long way to go to master all the techniques, but I think the Vietnamese fashion ecosystem has a unique potential for this.

About Julien Fournié Haute Couture

More than a fashion brand, Maison Julien Fournié is a luxury experience that transcends trends and seasons. With a commitment to excellence and innovation, Julien Fournié continues to redefine the world of ultra-luxury.

Julien Fournié was founded in 2009.

The history of the house is reflected in its haute couture collections, which are presented in Paris every January and July during Haute Couture Week.

For his first collection, the young couturier was awarded the Grand Prize for Creativity by the City of Paris in January 2010.

For his fourth collection, in January 2011, Julien Fournié became a “guest member” of the official calendar of the Chambre Syndicale de la Haute Couture catwalk shows. This was the first step towards recognizing Julien Fournié as a promising new brand in the circle of the great couturiers.

In January 2017, the Julien Fournié house was officially classified as “Haute Couture”. This label, protected by the French Ministry of Industry, is awarded to a few houses (only ten prestigious Haute Couture houses are currently on this list) that combine the best creativity in design and the highest quality in garment making.

Since its inception, Julien Fournié has also had the honor of being invited to show its collections at prestigious events abroad, in order to bring the couturier’s style to luxury clients from all over the world.

In March 2023, a Julien Fournié dress, worn by the actress Audrey Fleurot, entered the Grévin Museum in Paris.

In April 2023, the first retrospective of Julien Fournié’s work will be held at SCAD Lacoste in an exhibition entitled “Haute Couture un point c’est tout”.

While respecting tradition, Julien Fournié has also forged new partnerships with high-tech giants such as Apple and Tencent.

Julien Fournié has thus been able to digitize the creation, design and personalization of his haute couture pieces. He is one of the few haute couture designers to master the new digital tools.

Long regarded as a survivor of a bygone era, the haute couture market has experienced a new boom in recent years. Thanks to new technologies, Julien Fournié has been able to establish direct and unique means of communication with his clients. It is no longer a question of sending a sketch to the client for approval, as was the case in the past.

Julien Fournié has introduced a new process in which clients are no longer mere spectators of the creative process. They have become actors in the unique experience of creating a garment wherever they are.

Since December 2020, Julien Fournié has been developing a line of luxury bags and accessories. Initially, the idea was to offer handbags that could be seen in Julien Fournié shows and were previously reserved for haute couture customers.

Haute Couture

Julien Fournié celebrated his 50th birthday in style at the Théâtre Mogador with a show that was as much a spectacle as a collection. It moved through a series of scenes — city to party, career dressing to nightclub — a journey from serious to surreal.

Highlights included city wear in shades of blue with a Napoleonic flair — velvet details and sharp tailoring — and dreamy, flowing looks like a “thousand and one nights” ensemble with gold embroidery and violet mousseline veils, or a golden pollen-yellow gown trailing with strands of sparkling “diamonds.”

A scarlet fit-and-flare dress, shimmering with red-on-red embroidery, oozed Hollywood glamour. The finale was electric: sharp tailoring, skinny pants, and curvaceous dresses, lightning bolts of glitter flashing across clean silhouettes.

The entire company flooded the stage, and as Fournié joined the dancers, he was hoisted into the air, arms outstretched, as “I’m Crucified” by Army of Lovers blasted through the theater — a bold, celebratory moment met with cheers and well-earned applause.

Haute Couture

Of course, I have to run yet again to catch the press bus to Julien Fournié. I’ve followed this couturier closely for many seasons, met and spoken with him, and even been backstage. He may not be a global household name, but his dedication to couture has earned him devoted clients, fans, and followers. The Théâtre de Mogador is packed with them, and as the show begins, it’s clear this is more than just a runway presentation—it’s a full performance. Each passage assembles on stage before dispersing through the stalls, creating an immersive experience.

All of Fournié’s signatures are here, and later I learn he’s focused on what he truly loves—designing for his clients, not chasing celebrity placements or red carpets. The collection includes beautifully tailored pieces, often with velvet accents, iridescent drapery, and the long, siren-like gowns he excels at—evoking the glamour of classic cinema. There are coats, jackets, and practical couture pieces that cater to every moment of the day, from shopping and lunch to cocktails and dancing. There are playful touches, too, but the final sequence—charged with a space-age, lightning-bolt energy—has an unmistakable hint of Mugler. It’s sensational: fresh, sexy, and electrifying. Dancers weave in and out of the show, and for the finale, Julien Fournié joins them before being hoisted above the stage on wires. It’s a spectacle. Bravo.

Haute couture collections, summer 2025: Playful modernisation

What do designers Olivier Saillard, Kevin Germanier, Stéphane Rolland, Khol by Hamza Guelmouss and Valentin Nicot as well as Julien Fournié all have in common? About Julien Fournié

“Reaching the age of 50, I am now feeling completely free to reveal what has always been with me: enthusiasm, dreaming, dancing, partying… In short, everything that has driven me and set me in motion since childhood. In the house that bears my name and which I have founded 16 years ago, I don’t really design and make fashion pieces, I create characters. Where do I find the inspiration to do this? In movies, in cartoons, in music fromthe 1990s.

“When, as a young teenager I had become a prey to violence and harassment because of my differences, my bedroom had become my shelter. it was populated with fantastic figures: small statues of superheroes, mangas, princesses…, These characters have all grown up with me, They have accompanied me in all my battles and they are still populating my imagination and the shelves of my creative studio. Today, I am putting them on stage at Théâtre Mogador in Paris, to reveal them in full light because they have always acted as protective talismans for me.” – Julien Fournié, The Dancing Couturier

“There’s No Fashion Without Freedom”: An Exclusive Interview with Julien Fournié

Julien Fournié @julienfournie is much more than a fashion designer. He’s a dreamer, a storyteller, and a creative force in Haute Couture @hautecoutureweek. Known for dressing top celebrities and transforming runway shows into magical experiences, his collections go beyond fashion—they’re living stories that bring together imagination and impeccable skill. But behind the stunning runway shows and jaw-dropping celebrity collaborations is a designer who never stops dreaming. However, who is the magician?

Fashion designers, especially haute couture designers, are not meant to be trend followers. On the contrary, they’re supposed to create them. They’re supposed to be visionaries. Why should I be interested in following trends? That’s not my calling. That’s all there is to it!

Today, many people copy each other or follow trend books. As a result, some houses have lost their identity. It’s time for creative people to take back power.

Haute Couture : A Spectacle of Freedom, Fantasy and Unbridled Creativity

fashion week

In a dazzling showcase that transcends the boundaries of fashion, Julien Fournié unveiled his First Circus SS25 collection at the Théâtre Mogador in Paris, bringing to life an immersive dreamscape where haute couture collided with cinematic fantasy. A true celebration of the designer’s 50 years of artistry, this collection marks a daring evolution in his vision, one fueled by the enthusiasm, imagination, and boldness that have driven him since childhood.

For Julien Fournié, fashion is not merely about garments; it is about characters. As he eloquently expressed, “I don’t design and make fashion pieces, I create characters.” From this deeply personal inspiration came a vibrant cast of figures, a world populated by whimsical, larger-than-life creations, each more fantastical than the last. These characters are not just born from his mind; they are a reflection of his journey, of battles fought and dreams nurtured in the safe haven of his childhood bedroom. The First Circus collection is a tribute to those early years when superheroes, princesses, and fantastical beings shaped his imagination, forming the foundation for his haute couture empire…
