Haute Couture Jewelry: Blown Glass Pendants and Ex Voto Pieces

Julien Fournié's haute couture jewelry falls into two families: blown glass pendants, created for the First Creatures collection and flame-worked by master glassmaker Adrian Colin, and the Ex Voto brooches and earrings unveiled at the Last Queen show. Prices run from €390 to €3,995, available in the online boutique or by special order.

Julien Fournié founded his house in Paris in 2009 and joined the official haute couture calendar in January 2011. Since 2017 it has held the official Haute Couture appellation, granted by the French Ministry of Industry on the recommendation of the Fédération de la Haute Couture et de la Mode — a distinction only a dozen houses in the world hold. The jewelry extends that atelier work: every piece is made by hand, in very short series or as a single example.

Blown glass pendants from the First Creatures collection

Julien Fournié designed a series of pendants for the First Creatures haute couture collection, including the spectacular tiara and harness worn by the "Dark Mermaid". To bring them to life he called on Adrian Colin, Meilleur Ouvrier de France 2011 and deputy director of the MOF métiers d'art commission, a lampworker based in Dinan, Brittany.

Each piece begins as glass rods and tubes fused in the flame. Shape comes from the breath for hollow pieces and from the hand for solid ones; the flame marries black crystal to translucent glass and draws out the exact shades. The Dark Mermaid's jewels alone took Adrian Colin four months, with close to three hundred motifs worked at the torch. No two pieces are ever identical.

Three models make up the series: the Jelly Fish, a cosmic jellyfish (€390); the Manta, a bewitching ray (€390); and the Octopussy, an octopus with curled tentacles (€490). The more elaborate L'Origine du Monde pendant — a double motif of sunburst and origine du monde in blown glass, with faceted crystal beads and gold leaf trapped inside the glass, on a glass-sheathed chain — is €1,390.

Ex Voto jewelry, devotion reimagined

The Ex Voto collection draws on popular devotion and the materialisation of wishes. These small ex-votos, once left in shrines, are given a second life in gilt or silvered metal. Each piece sets private memory against contemporary form: flaming hearts, eyes catching the light, universal motifs worn as a sign of gratitude or hope.

The Ex Voto earrings and brooches were presented at the Last Queen haute couture show. They come in two versions, from €1,995 to €3,995, and are available by special order.

Designed to be worn on any occasion, they sit as easily with evening wear as with a daytime wardrobe.

How to acquire a Julien Fournié jewel

The blown glass pendants are ordered directly from the house's online boutique. Ex Voto pieces are made to special order: the client service team confirms the available version and the lead time. For a bespoke piece or a particular request, the house receives by appointment in Paris.
