Julien Fournié Premier Shield — Haute Couture Handbag

There is something deliberately historical about this handbag — and something equally deliberate about its decay.

The flap is powder-grained satin, its muted, chalky tone recalling the pigments of another century. Across its surface, grand siècle motifs unfold: architectural ornaments, foliate scrolls, the decorative vocabulary of seventeenth-century France rendered not in their original grandeur but in a state of beautiful dissolution. The embroidery captures them mid-decay — fraying at the edges of their former magnificence, still recognisable, still deeply beautiful. It is an act of poetic archaeology, worked entirely by hand in the Haute Couture tradition.

The Shield name is earned by the structure beneath. Side gussets in crocodile-embossed black leather give the bag its armature — robust, graphic, a counterweight to the fragility of the embroidered flap above. The contrast between powder and black, between the organic softness of the satin and the reptilian geometry of the leather, is the essential tension that makes this piece work.

The removable and adjustable chain (121 cm) and all hardware are finished in gunmetal — a dark, oxidised tone that refuses the optimism of gold and instead keeps faith with the piece’s deeper mood. Cool, slightly severe, entirely coherent.

The interior is lined in black grosgrain faille, with a double-gusseted pocket and a zipped pocket. The chain detaches cleanly, converting shoulder bag or crossbody into an evening clutch.

A meditation on time, ornamentation and the beauty of things that endure — made in one copie only, for a woman who wears history on her own terms.
