built exactly like a pair of work overalls — straps, tabs, clip buckles, straps crossed at the back — but cut in black silk faille over a boned bodice, and extended by a princess skirt embroidered with waves of vintage crystals. Underneath, the T-shirt: a nude sequin body-polo with rib-knit trims, embroidered with black sparks and finished with a striped knit collar.

At the neck, a jet ex-voto brooch. In hand, the Premier Arcadia bag in black grained leather with gunmetal studs.

The couturier’s words

A pirate owns nothing: he takes. A ship, a flag, a name, a garment — and he turns it into something else. That is the whole of the First Misfits collection. What this look took is workwear. Not the idea of workwear, not a nod to it: the overalls themselves, with their straps, their tabs and their buckles, and the T-shirt you wear underneath. All that was left was to take them to the ball.

The overalls. They are all there. The straps rise from the top of the bodice, cross at the back, and fasten at the front with two black buckles that snap shut exactly like the clips on a workman’s dungarees. Beneath them the bodice is constructed, boned, built like a corset — but the cut is still that of a bib. Workwear is clothing for the hands: it is cut so you can bend, carry, climb a ladder. Haute Couture is a craft of the hands too. I did not find that contradictory for a second.

The T-shirt. Under overalls there is always a T-shirt. This one is a body-polo in nude sequined tulle, with rib-knit trims at the collar and cuffs — rib knit is the signature of the T-shirt, it is what stops a neckline from sagging and keeps a sleeve in place on the forearm. Here it is treated as Haute Couture: the collar is in ecru knit striped with black, the collar of a teddy jacket; the cuffs are in tight black rib. Between the two, nothing — or rather a tulle that vanishes at three metres and gives the illusion of bare skin.

A sky on the T-shirt. Across that supposed skin I scattered black sparks: stars, asterisks, jet beads, dense at the top of the shoulders and growing sparser as they descend, like a sky emptying towards the horizon. It is the only place in the look where there is any sleight of hand. Everything else is honest: fabric, seams, buckles.

What silk faille changes. The whole shift lies in the material. Overalls are cut from cotton canvas; these are cut from black silk faille, a ribbed, heavy, matte fabric that stands up on its own and refuses the light. The gesture is the same; the garment no longer is. That is exactly what Haute Couture can do and no other discipline can: take a popular form without caricaturing it, and rebuild it until it becomes something else.

The signature tuck. Down the centre of the bodice runs the tuck, the Maison’s signature pleat. A flat, stitched fold that falls from the top of the bodice and continues into the skirt as a smooth band the embroidery never reaches. It does two things at once: it lengthens, and it gives the eye a place to rest. A dress embroidered all over no longer has a silhouette, only a surface. The tuck is this dress’s spine.

The ball skirt. Then the overalls open out. A full-circle skirt, its volume held by the faille itself, with no visible petticoat. Across the black, the embroidery draws waves: very dense at the waist, they spread apart as they fall and vanish before the hem. It is the opposite movement to the T-shirt’s, and the two meet at the waist, where a woman is at her narrowest.

The vintage crystals. These are not today’s crystals. We work with old stock — stones cut decades ago and left sleeping in drawers, whose exact colour and finish can no longer be found. They lack the overly sharp brilliance of contemporary crystal: they have a greyness, a smokiness, an irregularity. No two neighbouring stones return the same light. That is what gives these waves the look of sea foam rather than rhinestones — and it is also why this dress will never be made again exactly as it is: when the stock is gone, it is gone.

The ex-voto. At the collar, the brooch. An ex-voto is an offering: what you hang on the wall of a chapel when you have survived. Harbour chapels are full of them — marble plaques, model ships, silver hearts left by sailors who came back from a storm they should never have come through. This one is in jet, the black stone long said to absorb what is evil, set as a star around a cabochon. It is the only piece in the look that serves no purpose, and it is the most important one.

Arcadia. Then there is the bag. The Arcadia: black grained leather, gunmetal studs, a chain. Arcadia is the ideal land, the one you never reach. I like a Haute Couture bag to carry that name, and to be, in the hand, the hardest piece in the look. Grained leather, dark metal, nothing soft. You do not set out for Arcadia without armour.

The name. I call it the Salopette Grand Soir. In French, salopette means overalls, and le grand soir — the great evening — means two things at once: the night you bring out your finest gown, and the night everything is turned upside down, the revolution once promised by the people who wore real overalls. This dress holds both ends. It is made for a gala, and it is made from the clothes of those who were never invited.

Julien Fournié

Secrets of the Haute Couture Overalls Dress

What is a Haute Couture overalls dress?

A dress whose bodice reproduces the exact construction of work overalls — bib, straps crossed at the back, tabs and clip buckles — but cut in a couture fabric and built over a boned bodice.
