What the Haute Couture appellation actually means<\/h2>\n
“Haute couture” is not a style, a price bracket or a marketing term. In France it is a designation protected by law and granted each year by a commission working with the F\u00e9d\u00e9ration de la Haute Couture et de la Mode<\/a>, under the authority of the French Ministry of Industry.<\/p>\n To be granted the appellation, a house must, among other conditions:<\/p>\n The list is reviewed season by season, which is why it changes: houses join it, and houses leave it. Fewer than a dozen names hold the appellation at any given moment. Julien Fourni\u00e9 has held it since January 2017.<\/p>\n Julien Fourni\u00e9 trained at the \u00c9cole de la Chambre Syndicale de la Couture Parisienne, choosing its technical discipline over a place at the ESAA Duperr\u00e9. He learned the trade inside the houses that defined it: Christian Dior, Givenchy under Alexander McQueen, Nina Ricci, C\u00e9line.<\/p>\n In 2000 his graduate collection won the Mo\u00ebt & Chandon prize for best accessory at the Paris Fashion Awards. Jean Paul Gaultier hired him into his haute couture studio, where he researched fabrics and embroidery and worked on stage costumes for Madonna’s Drowned World Tour. Claude Montana, the master of architectural cut, took him on next.<\/p>\n By 2003 he was creative director of Torrente, first for ready-to-wear, then for the entire house including its couture line. Three years later he moved to Seoul as creative director of several brands for the LG Fashion Group – an early education in the Asian luxury market that still shapes how the Maison works today.<\/p>\n He founded his own house in 2009, around one conviction: that Parisian couture survives only if its craftsmanship is matched by genuine innovation.<\/p>\n In January 2010 the Ville de Paris awarded him its Grand Prix de la Cr\u00e9ation.<\/p>\n In January 2011, for his debut on the official Haute Couture calendar, he featured only Black models on the runway<\/a>-a first.<\/p>\n From its earliest seasons the Maison has shown outside France. It has presented three times in Singapore. In November 2012 First Retrospective was staged in the Hall of Honour of Stockholm City Hall. In October 2015 First Initiation opened the second edition of Vietnam International Fashion Week in Ho Chi Minh City, and in June 2025 First Circus opened it again. In October 2018 the house took part in the French Touch gala at the Teatr Wielki in Warsaw, broadcast on Polish national television.<\/p>\n In 2011 Julien Fourni\u00e9 co-founded FashionLab with Dassault Syst\u00e8mes, an incubator for 3D design in fashion. Shoe collections developed with those tools have appeared on every runway since July 2014 and are made for couture clients as special orders. Tim Cook visited the atelier in 2015. The Maison designs with its clients rather than for them: a piece is often drawn live on iPad, with the client, wherever they are in the world.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t2009\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t2011\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t2011\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t2017\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t2020\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t2022\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t1023\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t2026\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t The house is founded. Julien Fourni\u00e9 establishes his own house in Paris, on a market the large groups had left behind and younger labels had ignored. His debut collection, First Pieces, is shown in June 2009.<\/p> \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t Guest member of the official calendar. With his fourth collection, in January 2011, Julien Fourni\u00e9 joins the official haute couture calendar as a guest member. Most commissions run from first appointment to delivery in 4 to 25 weeks, depending on embroidery.<\/p>\n Shown on 27 January 2026 at Salle Gaveau in Paris, First Misfits argues against the flattening of contemporary fashion. Couture, in this collection, is where difference is allowed to be visible.<\/p>\n Men and women exchange pieces from each other’s wardrobes. Silk sits next to denim, technical cloth next to lurex, with no hierarchy between them. The embroidery borrows from street art, manga and genre cinema rather than from the Second Empire. For the bridal pieces, the sculptor Andr\u00e9 Tognotti carved Carrara marble into crowns and bodice cups.<\/p>\n The collection is personal: Fourni\u00e9 has spoken about being bullied as a child for being different. First Misfits is the answer.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\t Since December 2020 the Maison has made a line of bags and accessories. It began with the handbags carried on the runway, which couture clients had been asking to buy for years.<\/p>\n The line has since grown: Big Bang and Premier handbags, Pluton clutches, Pollux and Saturne totes, the Hexagon monogram line, haute couture belts and, since 2022, jewellery. Each piece is made to the standards of French leather craft, in limited numbers.<\/p>\n They are sold only through the Maison’s own online boutique.<\/p>\n The Maison holds no stock and produces nothing speculatively. A garment exists because someone ordered it. That is not a sustainability policy borrowed from ready-to-wear; it is simply how couture works, and it is the reason couture wastes so little.<\/p>\n Materials are traced: the Maison maintains a record of the origin and production conditions of its fabrics, leathers and embroideries. Natural fibres are preferred where the construction allows. Offcuts are kept and reused in accessories and in the studio’s development work.<\/p>\n A couture garment is also, by design, repairable. Seams are hand-finished so they can be opened; allowances are left in so the piece can be altered years later. The Maison alters and restores its own pieces for as long as they are worn.<\/p>\n Yes. The house was granted the Haute Couture appellation in January 2017 by the French Ministry of Industry, on the recommendation of the Chambre Syndicale. The appellation is protected by French law and reviewed each season. Julien Fourni\u00e9 is listed as a member house by the F\u00e9d\u00e9ration de la Haute Couture et de la Mode.<\/p>\n Fewer than a dozen houses hold the official Haute Couture appellation at any one time. Haute couture is made after the order, to one client’s measurements, largely by hand, with several fittings. In France only houses holding the appellation may legally describe their work as haute couture.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t Between at least four weeks from the first appointment to delivery, depending on the embroidery. A day dress sits at the lower end; a heavily embroidered evening gown at the upper. Three to five fittings are usual.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t Prices are quoted individually, after the first appointment, because no two commissions are alike. The estimate depends on the construction, the materials and the hours of hand-work involved, and is given in writing before any work begins. <\/p>\n \u00a0<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t Yes. Most of the Maison’s clients live outside France. Fittings can be held in Paris or, for commissions above a certain scope, in your city. The Maison travels to the Gulf, to East and Southeast Asia and to North America for example, and handles export documentation and delivery.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t Not necessarily. A first appointment can be held remotely, and the Maison uses digital sketches to reduce the number of journeys required. At least one physical fitting is normally needed before the piece is finished. This fitting can take place wherever you wish.<\/p>\n \u00a0<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t Yes. Bridal commissions are taken as haute couture, on the same terms as any other piece: made to order, to your measurements, with fittings.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t In Paris. Holding an atelier in Paris with a permanent team of specialist workers is one of the conditions of the Haute Couture appellation. Appointments are by arrangement only. <\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t Yes. The bags, belts and jewellery are sold directly through the Maison’s online boutique, with worldwide delivery. They began as pieces made for the runway and for couture clients, and are produced in limited numbers.<\/p>\n During Paris Haute Couture Week: in January for spring\/summer, and in July for autumn\/winter. However, Julien Fourni\u00e9 does not wish to have the pace of his creations dictated to him; with the Federation’s approval, he can decide not to stage a show for a given season. Haute Couture does not operate at the frenetic pace of major luxury groups. The current collection is First Misfits.<\/p>\n It is made to order, so nothing is produced that no one wants, and no unsold stock is destroyed. Materials are traced to their origin, garments are built to be altered and repaired, and the Maison maintains its own pieces for as long as they are worn.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t Julien Fourni\u00e9 leads the studio. Jean Paul Cauvin, Chief Operating Officer since 2013, oversees production, casting and the shows. Madame Jacqueline runs the atelier as premi\u00e8re d’atelier. Specialist work – feather, embroidery, marble, metalwork – is commissioned from ateliers the Maison has worked with for years.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t Yes. The Maison has presented three times in Singapore, at Stockholm City Hall in 2012, at Vietnam International Fashion Week in Ho Chi Minh City in 2015 and again in 2025, and at the French Touch gala in Warsaw in 2018.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t Rita Ora wore the Constellation gown from First Circus at the opening ceremony of the Open Masters Games in Abu Dhabi in February 2026. Dilraba Dilmurat, Yoshi of TREASURE, Bai Lu, ZiYu, Angelababy, Bibi Zhou and Liu Yu have worn the Maison in Asia, on magazine covers, in concert and at the Tencent Music Entertainment Awards. The mezzo-soprano Marina Viotti, the soprano Pretty Yende, the actress Audrey Fleurot and the actor Gong Jun have worn it on stage and at gala evenings in Paris. The people behind the Maison<\/h2>\nA haute couture house is its people. Jean Paul Cauvin, a fashion writer and editor, has overseen production, casting and the soundtrack of every show since the first; he has been the company’s Chief Operating Officer since 2013. Madame Jacqueline, premi\u00e8re d’atelier, and the make-up artist Nicolas Degennes have worked with Julien Fourni\u00e9 from the beginning. Since 2014 the London salon Neville, led by Elena Lavagni, has done the hair for every show and every shoot.\nThe pieces are made with ateliers the Maison has worked with for years: the feather atelier Maison Julien Vermeulen, the embroidery house Amman, and the houses Guigou and Sfate et Combier, alongside YKK. The late Maria Luisa Poumaillou, the buyer who made careers, advised the house in its early years.\n

A piece made for one person<\/h2>\nA Julien Fourni\u00e9 garment is drawn for one body and one occasion. Nothing is cut before your measurements are taken, and no two commissions are alike – which is why the house holds no stock and produces nothing speculatively. A gown for a gala, a wedding or an evening is built around how you move and what you will actually wear.\nThe construction is where the work shows.
